DigitalOcean says its Katanemo acquisition is about closing the gap between agent demos and stable production systems. Here is what changed and what developers should watch next.

Fewer than 10% of AI use cases make it past pilot mode, and that number explains why DigitalOcean just bought Katanemo Labs. The acquisition is not about another model launch. It is about the unglamorous work of getting AI agents to run safely and predictably once real customers depend on them.

On April 2, 2026, DigitalOcean announced it had acquired Katanemo Labs and named Katanemo co-founder Salman Paracha as Senior Vice President of AI. In the same post, DigitalOcean framed the deal as part of its push to become what it calls an agentic inference cloud, a platform focused on running always-on AI systems in production.

If you are not deep in infrastructure jargon, inference is the stage where a trained model actually handles live requests. It is where money is spent, latency is felt, and customer trust is won or lost. DigitalOcean is betting that this stage is where most teams need help now, especially as agent workflows become long-running and tool-heavy.

The strongest signal in the announcement is what DigitalOcean chose to emphasize. It did not lead with benchmark scores. It led with execution gaps. The company pointed to its own Currents research and cited outside McKinsey analysis showing how hard it is to move from prototype to durable operations. Katanemo brings two assets that matter in that context. First is a framework-agnostic data plane called Plano.
